The classic Sahara circuit with the sea added on: cross the Atlas to the Erg Chebbi dunes, loop back through the kasbah valleys, then breathe in the Atlantic at windswept Essaouira.

Introduction

This 8-day Morocco itinerary pairs the classic Marrakech–Sahara circuit with the Atlantic coast at Essaouira — desert dunes and ocean ramparts in a single private loop. Below is the complete day-by-day plan, honest pricing, inclusions, the best time to travel and everything else you need to plan.

Overview

This 8-day itinerary is for travellers who want the full desert experience and a taste of the Atlantic — the two sides of Morocco that photograph best. Starting and ending in Marrakech, it crosses the High Atlas to the great dunes of Erg Chebbi, gives you a proper two nights in the Sahara, then loops back through the kasbah country before finishing on the breezy ramparts of Essaouira, the country's most relaxed coastal town.

It's a private, flexible loop: your own Berber driver-guide, hand-picked riads and our own luxury desert camp. Because it begins and ends in Marrakech, it's the easy choice if you're flying in and out of the same airport.

Why choose this tour

What sets this 8-day tour apart:

  • Desert and ocean. Two of Morocco's most striking landscapes in one trip, without a punishing pace.
  • Two desert nights. A luxury-camp night plus a slower desert morning — time to actually feel the Sahara.
  • An easy Marrakech loop. Same start and finish airport, no open-jaw flights needed.
  • Owned and private. Our own camp and camels, your own guide and pace.

Highlights

  • A full day in Marrakech — souks, palaces and Jemaa el-Fnaa
  • The Tizi n'Tichka pass and UNESCO Aït Ben Haddou
  • The Dades and Todra gorges through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs
  • Two nights at Erg Chebbi with a sunset camel trek and a desert morning
  • The Skoura palm oasis and the road of the kasbahs
  • Windswept, whitewashed Essaouira and its Atlantic ramparts
  • Fresh grilled seafood on the harbour at Essaouira

Itinerary

Day 1Day 1: Arrive in Marrakech — the Red City

Arrival. We meet you at the airport or your riad and help you settle in. The afternoon is free to begin exploring the Marrakech medina — the souks, the Koutoubia minaret and the great square of Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk.

Evening & accommodation. A traditional riad in the medina. Insider tip: dinner on a rooftop overlooking Jemaa el-Fnaa is the classic first-night experience. Overnight in Marrakech.

Day 2Day 2: Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley

Morning. South over the High Atlas by the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with tea and photo stops, to the UNESCO ksar of Aït Ben Haddou.

Afternoon. Through Ouarzazate and the Skoura oasis to the Dades Valley. Evening & accommodation: a kasbah hotel with valley views. Travel time: ~6–7 h with stops · distance: ~330 km. Dinner & breakfast included.

Day 3Day 3: Dades Gorge → Todra Gorge → Merzouga (sunset camel trek & luxury camp)

Morning. The Dades Gorge hairpins and the towering Todra Gorge, where you can walk the canyon floor beneath 300-metre walls.

Evening — camel trek & camp. Through Erfoud and Rissani to Merzouga, where a sunset camel trek carries you into the dunes to our luxury camp for dinner and drumming. Travel time: ~5 h + 1 h camel · distance: ~300 km. Dinner & breakfast at camp.

Day 4Day 4: Sahara sunrise → a desert morning → Merzouga (second night)

Morning. Sunrise over the dunes and breakfast, then a 4x4 morning among the nomads, the Gnawa village of Khamlia and the fossil fields — or sandboard the slopes.

Afternoon. Relax by the hotel pool with dune views before a second, unhurried night in the desert. Insider tip: the slower day here is what turns a desert visit into a desert memory. Breakfast & dinner included.

Day 5Day 5: Merzouga → Rissani → Skoura → Ouarzazate → Marrakech

Morning. The long, scenic drive west retraces the kasbah road — the date town of Rissani, the Skoura palm oasis and Ouarzazate — with photo and tea stops.

Afternoon. Back over the Tizi n'Tichka to Marrakech. Evening & accommodation: a Marrakech riad. Travel time: ~8 h with stops · distance: ~560 km. Breakfast included.

Day 6Day 6: Marrakech — a guided city day

Full day. A relaxed guided day in the Red City: the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, the tranquil Majorelle Garden and the artisan souks, with free time to shop or unwind.

Accommodation. Second night in Marrakech. Insider tip: book a hammam and massage in the afternoon — the perfect reset after the desert. Breakfast included.

Day 7Day 7: Marrakech → Essaouira (the Atlantic coast)

Morning. West to the coast, stopping at an argan cooperative where women press Morocco's famous oil (and goats sometimes climb the trees).

Afternoon & evening. Essaouira — a whitewashed, blue-shuttered port town of Portuguese ramparts, art galleries and fresh seafood. Accommodation: a riad in the medina. Travel time: ~3 h · distance: ~190 km. Insider tip: eat grilled sardines straight off the harbour boats. Breakfast included.

Day 8Day 8: Essaouira → Marrakech → departure

Morning. A last stroll along the Essaouira ramparts and beach before the drive back to Marrakech for your departure (or a final Marrakech night, on request). Travel time: ~3 h · distance: ~190 km. Breakfast included.

Best time to travel

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal. Essaouira stays cool and breezy even in July and August, so this coast-and-desert loop works well in summer if you don't mind hot desert days (we run the camel trek at dawn and dusk). See our Morocco weather guide.

What to pack

Light layers and a warm jacket for the desert nights, a scarf, closed shoes, sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen, a swimsuit for the pool and the coast, and a light windbreaker for breezy Essaouira. A head-torch and power bank are handy at camp. Full list: Morocco packing list.

Travel tips

Insider tips: Essaouira is windy — pack a light jacket even in summer; carry small dirham notes for the coast's cafés and the argan cooperative; and use the Marrakech city day (Day 6) for a hammam. Want the north and Fes instead of the coast? Choose the 7-day Marrakech-to-Fes route; for the complete country, see the 10-day grand tour.

How booking works

Tell us your dates, group size and starting city by the enquiry form or WhatsApp and you hear back personally, usually within a few hours, with a clear all-in price. A small deposit holds your dates and you pay the balance on arrival, so you never prepay in full. Free cancellation up to 7 days before departure, and we confirm your pickup by WhatsApp the night before.

Booking direct with our Berber family

Hotel Les Roches is our own — we were born at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes and have run it since 2004. You deal with the same family that owns the hotel, runs the desert camp and leads the camels, so there is no agency markup, nothing is subcontracted, and the price you are quoted is the price you pay.

What a night at our camp is like

After the sunset camel trek you reach our private camp as the sky turns from gold to deep blue. The tents are proper rooms — a real bed with warm blankets and an en-suite hot shower — and dinner is a home-cooked tagine under the stars, followed by Berber drums around the fire. With no light for a hundred kilometres the Milky Way is astonishing, and you wake early to climb a dune for sunrise.

What our guests say

★★★★★

The best part were the activities: a quad tour was arranged for us in minutes, and we took a jeep tour the next day with guide Asis, who was awesome and led us to a nomad camp. Highly recommend!

Hassan and the hosts made me feel at home. The food was like a culinary journey and the location against the Sahara dunes was stunning. Watching the sunset over the dunes was a magical moment.

A great experience at Auberge Les Roches and their camp. The camel desert ride and camping experience was amazing. Special mention for their food and the friendliness of the guys at the camp.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this tour add Essaouira?
Essaouira gives the trip a completely different flavour — Atlantic light, seafood and a laid-back medina — and it's an easy three hours from Marrakech, so it fits neatly on the end of the desert loop.
How many nights are in the desert?
Two — a first night in our luxury camp among the dunes after the sunset camel trek, and a second, slower night in Merzouga with a desert morning in between.
Is this tour a loop back to Marrakech?
Yes — it starts and ends in Marrakech, ideal if you're flying in and out of the same airport. If you'd rather end in Fes, see the 7-day itinerary.
Can we swap Essaouira for more desert time?
Absolutely — we can add a night in the dunes or a day in the gorges instead of the coast. The plan is fully flexible.
What's the best time for this route?
Spring and autumn are ideal; Essaouira is cool and breezy even in summer, which makes this a good warm-season option. See the best-time section below.
How far is Merzouga from Marrakech, and how long is the drive?
It's about 560 km and 8–9 hours over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, which is why the journey is spread over 2–3 days with stops at Aït Ben Haddou, the gorges and the Ziz Valley rather than driven in one go.
How comfortable is the desert camp?
Very — our private luxury camp at Erg Chebbi has en-suite tents with real beds, hot showers, private bathrooms, rugs and plenty of blankets for the cool desert night, plus a Berber dinner under the stars.
Are your tours private or shared?
Every tour is private by default — your own vehicle, driver-guide and flexible pace. Shared group departures are offered only on the Marrakech–Merzouga–Marrakech and Marrakech–Merzouga–Fes routes.
Is the tour suitable for families and older travellers?
Yes. The pace is gentle, the camel ride is optional (we can drive you to camp by 4x4 instead), and we adapt for children and any mobility needs — just tell us when you book.
