Ouarzazate Desert Tours 2026

Ouarzazate sits between the High Atlas and the Sahara, which makes it the shortest starting point for a desert trip. From here you can reach the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga or the Zagora dunes in far less driving than from Marrakech.

Home › Ouarzazate Desert Tours

Ouarzazate is about 4 hours south of Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), and only around 5 hours from the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga. If you are already in Ouarzazate, or flying into its small airport (OZZ), you can skip the long first day from Marrakech and reach the Sahara faster. All our Ouarzazate tours are private, include a night in our luxury desert camp, and can finish in Ouarzazate, Marrakech or Fes.

Where Ouarzazate sits, and why it speeds up a desert trip

Ouarzazate is the meeting point of the High Atlas and the desert south. Most people reach the Sahara from Marrakech, which means a long first day climbing over the Atlas before the real desert scenery starts. Beginning in Ouarzazate removes that leg: you are already past the mountains, so the drive east is shorter and the landscape is desert from the start. The road runs through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, past Skoura's palm grove, into the Dades and Todra gorges, then on through Tinghir and Erfoud to the dunes. Real driving times are roughly 1 hour Ouarzazate to Skoura, 2.5 hours to the Dades, 4 hours to Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, and about 5 hours to Merzouga with stops.

What to expect on the road

These are good, paved roads, but they wind through mountains and gorges, so allow for a slower average speed than a motorway and bring something for motion sickness if you are prone to it. The only off-tarmac travel is the short, gentle camel ride into the dunes to reach the camp, which we can replace with a 4x4 transfer if you prefer. Days are warm and dry; nights at the camp are cool to cold depending on the season. None of the walking is demanding, so the tours suit most fitness levels, including families with children and older travellers.

Best time to start a desert tour from Ouarzazate

March to May and September to November are the most comfortable, with warm days and cool nights. Winter (December to February) is quiet and clear but desert nights can drop close to freezing, so pack a warm layer. In July and August the midday heat is strong, so we run the camel trek at sunrise and sunset and keep the middle of the day for rest. Whatever the month, the camp provides plenty of blankets and the tents have proper beds.

The 2-day Ouarzazate to Merzouga tour is the quickest way to the dunes and works for couples, families and solo travellers alike. If you want more of the kasbah valleys and the Draa, ask us to add a day. The comparison below shows who each option suits.

What every multi-day desert tour includes

A private air-conditioned vehicle with fuel and a driver-guide, hotel or kasbah nights on the road, one night in our own luxury camp at Erg Chebbi with a sunset camel trek, and half board at the camp. We collect you from your hotel and confirm the pickup by WhatsApp the night before; bottled water is included, while lunches, entry fees and tips are extra.

How to choose the right tour

Pick by how much time you have and where you start. From Marrakech, 3 days is the classic round trip and 4–5 days add a relaxed day in the dunes and the oases. From Fes, the northern route runs 3–5 days. To travel one-way between two cities without backtracking, choose a Marrakech–Fes crossing.

Best time to visit and what to pack

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable; winter days are pleasant but desert nights are cold, and in summer we ride at sunrise and sunset. Whatever the month, bring light layers, a warm jacket for the night, a scarf, sun protection and closed shoes — the camp provides bedding and blankets.
