Ait Ben Haddou is the most famous ksar (fortified village) in Morocco — a cluster of earthen kasbahs rising from a hill above the Ounila River, guarding the old caravan route between Marrakech and the Sahara. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has stood here since at least the 11th century.
The films shot at Ait Ben Haddou
Its timeless mud-brick architecture has made it a favourite of filmmakers: Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, The Mummy, Kingdom of Heaven and Game of Thrones (as the city of Yunkai) were all filmed here.
Visiting Ait Ben Haddou
You cross the riverbed and climb through the ksar's lanes to the old granary at the top, with sweeping views over the valley. It's a highlight of nearly every Marrakech desert tour, usually on the first day, paired with nearby Ouarzazate and its film studios.
