The High Atlas & Tizi n’Tichka

The drive begins by climbing the High Atlas Mountains over the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 m — Morocco’s highest major road, lined with Berber villages, walnut groves and sweeping switchback views.

Ait Ben Haddou

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Ait Ben Haddou is a fortified mud-brick ksar that has guarded the old caravan road for nearly a thousand years — and starred in Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Lawrence of Arabia.

Best time to take a Marrakech desert tour

You can run a Marrakech to Merzouga tour all year, but the most comfortable seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), with warm days and cool nights. Winter days are pleasant but desert nights can drop close to freezing, so bring a warm layer. July and August are hot at midday, so we time the camel trek for sunrise and sunset and keep the middle of the day for rest. Whatever the month, the camp has proper beds and plenty of blankets, and the night sky over Erg Chebbi is superb the whole year round.

How long is the drive, really?

Merzouga is about 9 hours by road from Marrakech, which is exactly why we spread it over two or three days rather than racing there and back. The first day crosses the High Atlas to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate (roughly 4 hours of driving with stops); the second follows the Dades and Todra gorges to the dunes. Roads are paved and in good condition the whole way — the only off-tarmac travel is the short camel ride into the dunes to reach the camp, which we can swap for a 4x4 if you prefer.

Which tour suits you

Families and first-timers usually pick the 3-day tour — enough to reach the big dunes and sleep in the camp without long days back to back. Couples often add our honeymoon tent for a private candlelit dinner on the sand. Travellers with more time choose the 4 or 5-day versions for a slower pace and extra desert time, while budget travellers take the shared group departures, which follow the same route and camp at a lower price.
