Introduction

The Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate day trip packs the best of the Atlas crossing into a single day from Marrakech — ideal if the desert is too far for your schedule. You'll stand inside Morocco's most filmed kasbah, see the studios at Ouarzazate, and cross the High Atlas twice on one of the country's most scenic roads. Below is the full plan, pricing, the best time to go and our tips for a long day on the road.

Overview

If you can't spare days for the desert, this full-day trip still gives you the High Atlas and Morocco's most famous kasbah. You cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO ksar and film location for Gladiator and Game of Thrones — visit the studios and kasbah at Ouarzazate, and return to Marrakech the same evening.

Why choose this tour

Why take this day trip:

  • Morocco's iconic kasbah without committing to a multi-day tour.
  • The full Tizi n'Tichka crossing — Atlas scenery both ways.
  • Private — your own vehicle, guide and pace.
  • Easy to extend into a full desert tour.

Highlights

  • Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) over the High Atlas
  • Ait Ben Haddou UNESCO kasbah
  • Ouarzazate and the Atlas Film Studios
  • Berber villages and mountain viewpoints
  • Private vehicle and guide, hotel pickup

Best time to travel

This trip runs year-round. Spring and autumn are most comfortable; in winter the Tizi n'Tichka pass can see snow, which is beautiful but may add time. Summer is hot at Ait Ben Haddou by midday, so we start early. See our seasons guide.

What to pack

Bring comfortable walking shoes for the kasbah climb, sun protection, a hat, water and a light layer for the higher passes. A camera is a must — the ksar and the Atlas road are highly photogenic.

Travel tips

What to expect: real driving distances on good but winding roads — bring something for motion sickness if you're prone to it. Tips: carry small dirham notes for lunches, entry fees and tips, and keep onward flights to the evening of the final day or later.

How booking works

Tell us your dates, group size and starting city by the enquiry form or WhatsApp and you hear back personally, usually within a few hours, with a clear all-in price. A small deposit holds your dates and you pay the balance on arrival, so you never prepay in full. Free cancellation up to 7 days before departure, and we confirm your pickup by WhatsApp the night before.

Booking direct with our Berber family

Hotel Les Roches is our own — we were born at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes and have run it since 2004. You deal with the same family that owns the hotel, runs the desert camp and leads the camels, so there is no agency markup, nothing is subcontracted, and the price you are quoted is the price you pay.

What a night at our camp is like

After the sunset camel trek you reach our private camp as the sky turns from gold to deep blue. The tents are proper rooms — a real bed with warm blankets and an en-suite hot shower — and dinner is a home-cooked tagine under the stars, followed by Berber drums around the fire. With no light for a hundred kilometres the Milky Way is astonishing, and you wake early to climb a dune for sunrise.

What our guests say

★★★★★

Perhaps the greatest hotel in the area — literally in the desert, with a beautiful pool. The staff is dedicated to making your stay just what you expected. I will definitely return.

The hotel is lovely, next to the dunes. We stayed in a reasonably priced, lovely suite. Everything was beautiful and cosy.

I don't know how you can go wrong with this: a hotel by the dunes, camel rides to a luxury camp, food and entertainment provided. The staff and guides were so happy to make a night of it.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the day?
About 12 hours door to door, with roughly 7–8 hours of driving and time at the kasbah and Ouarzazate.
Does this trip reach the desert?
No — Ait Ben Haddou is on the way to the desert but the dunes are much further. For dunes, see our 3-day Merzouga tour.
Is there a guide at the kasbah?
We can arrange a local guide at Ait Ben Haddou for a small fee; just ask.
Can it be combined with the desert?
Yes — it's the first leg of our multi-day tours, so you can simply continue to Merzouga.
How far is Merzouga from Marrakech, and how long is the drive?
It's about 560 km and 8–9 hours over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, which is why the journey is spread over 2–3 days with stops at Aït Ben Haddou, the gorges and the Ziz Valley rather than driven in one go.
How comfortable is the desert camp?
Very — our private luxury camp at Erg Chebbi has en-suite tents with real beds, hot showers, private bathrooms, rugs and plenty of blankets for the cool desert night, plus a Berber dinner under the stars.
Are your tours private or shared?
Every tour is private by default — your own vehicle, driver-guide and flexible pace. Shared group departures are offered only on the Marrakech–Merzouga–Marrakech and Marrakech–Merzouga–Fes routes.
Is the tour suitable for families and older travellers?
Yes. The pace is gentle, the camel ride is optional (we can drive you to camp by 4x4 instead), and we adapt for children and any mobility needs — just tell us when you book.
When is the best time of year to travel?
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most comfortable, with warm days and cool nights. Winter nights are cold and summer is hot at midday, so we run camel treks at sunrise and sunset.
