3-Day Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga

Morning — departure & the climb into the High Atlas. We collect you from your Marrakech riad or hotel at around 7:30 am and head south out of the Red City. Within an hour the plains give way to the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains, and the road begins its long, theatrical climb toward the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) — the highest major road pass in North Africa.

Scenic route & stops. We stop at a panoramic viewpoint near the pass for mint tea and photographs of the switchbacks falling away beneath you, with Berber villages of red pisé clinging to the slopes and walnut terraces in the valleys. Your driver-guide — born in this region — will point out argan and almond groves and explain how mountain families live across the seasons.

Late morning — Ait Ben Haddou. By late morning we reach Ait Ben Haddou, the fortified earthen ksar that has guarded the old caravan road since the 11th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll cross the Ounila riverbed and climb through its honey-coloured lanes to the agadir (granary) at the summit for sweeping valley views. History & culture: this was a key stop on the trans-Saharan trade route in gold, salt and slaves; today it is one of the most filmed locations on earth — Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and Game of Thrones were all shot here. Photography: the morning light on the kasbah walls from across the river is the classic shot.

Lunch. We break for lunch at a terrace restaurant overlooking the ksar (own account) — try a chicken-and-lemon tagine or a vegetable couscous if it's a Friday.

Afternoon — Ouarzazate & the road to Dades. After lunch we continue to Ouarzazate, 'the door of the desert' and home to Atlas Film Studios, then turn east along the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs and the Valley of the Roses to the Dades Valley, arriving in the late afternoon.

Evening & accommodation. You'll settle into a comfortable kasbah-style hotel in the Dades, with time to relax before a home-style Moroccan dinner. Travel time: ~6–7 hours' driving with stops · distance: ~330 km. Insider tip: sit on the left side of the vehicle in the morning for the best Atlas views, and keep a light jacket handy — the Dades sits at altitude and evenings are cool. Morning — Dades Gorge & the road to Todra. After breakfast we drive the spectacular Dades Gorge, famous for its hairpin 'monkey-finger' rock formations and the switchback road that photographers love. We then cross to the Todra Gorge near Tinghir, where sheer rock walls rising up to 300 metres close to barely ten metres apart over a clear, cold river.

Stops, culture & photography. You'll have time to walk along the canyon floor between the towering walls — the scale is humbling and the light shifts beautifully through the morning. We pass through Tinghir's palm oasis, and your guide can arrange a short visit to a local rug cooperative or a Berber family home for mint tea if you'd like a cultural stop.

Lunch. We stop for lunch in Tinghir or Erfoud (own account); Erfoud is famous for its dates and marine fossils, and there are workshops where you can see polished fossil tabletops.

Afternoon — into the Sahara at Merzouga. Through the date-palm country around Erfoud and Rissani, the landscape flattens and empties until, on the horizon, the dunes of Erg Chebbi rise abruptly — up to 150 metres of orange sand. We reach our hotel at the foot of the dunes in the afternoon, with time to freshen up and change.

Evening — sunset camel trek & the desert camp. The highlight of the trip: as the heat softens you mount your camel and ride about an hour into the heart of the dunes, cresting a high ridge to watch the sun set over the Sahara. You arrive at our private luxury desert camp for a traditional dinner, Berber drumming around the fire, and a sky thick with stars far from any light. Accommodation: a private en-suite tent with a real bed and hot shower. Travel time: ~5 hours' driving + ~1 hour camel trek · distance: ~290 km. Insider tip: bring a small head-torch and a warm layer for the evening, and pack an overnight bag so you don't carry your whole suitcase onto the camel. Dinner & breakfast included.

Morning — Sahara sunrise. Wake early (your guide will give you the exact time the night before) and climb a nearby dune for sunrise over Erg Chebbi — the sand shifting from cool grey to molten gold is, for most guests, the single most memorable moment of the trip. Photography: shoot with the sun behind a dune crest for clean ridgelines and long shadows; keep footprints out of your foreground.

Breakfast & return. Ride or walk back to the hotel for breakfast and a proper shower, then we begin the return drive to Marrakech. Scenic route & stops: we retrace the kasbah valleys with photo and tea stops, recross the Tizi n'Tichka, and stop for lunch (own account) along the way.

Cultural note. Your guide will share stories of the nomadic families who still live in the desert and the Gnawa music of nearby Khamlia village, descendants of sub-Saharan peoples — a reminder that the Sahara is a living home, not just scenery.
