HomeDestinations › The Sahara Desert in Morocco

The Sahara is the world's largest hot desert, and Morocco offers one of its most accessible and beautiful corners. For most visitors, 'the Moroccan Sahara' means the great dune fields of Erg Chebbi (at Merzouga) and Erg Chigaga (near Zagora).

Erg Chebbi vs Erg Chigaga

Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) has the tallest dunes and is reachable by normal road — ideal for most travellers. Erg Chigaga (Zagora) is remoter, requiring a long 4x4 journey, and rewards those after deeper solitude.

Planning a Sahara desert tour

Most Sahara tours start in Marrakech or Fes and take 3–5 days, including a night in a desert camp and a camel trek.

What to pack

Layers for cold nights, sun protection, a scarf for the wind, closed shoes and a refillable water bottle. See our what to wear in Morocco guide.
