HomeTravel Guide › What to Wear in Morocco

Morocco is a relatively conservative, sunny country with big day-to-night temperature swings — so dressing well here is about comfort, sun protection and respect. Here's what our local team recommends.

General principles

Choose light, breathable fabrics, lean towards modest cuts that cover shoulders and knees (especially away from tourist areas), and always pack a warm layer — even in summer the desert and mountains are cold at night.

For the cities (Marrakech, Fes)

Comfortable, modest clothing and good walking shoes for the medinas. Women may feel more comfortable with a scarf to hand.

For the Sahara desert

Loose long sleeves and trousers protect against sun and sand; a scarf is invaluable against blowing sand; bring a fleece for the cold nights at the camp. Closed shoes keep sand out.

For the Atlas Mountains

Layers and a windproof jacket; it's noticeably cooler at altitude, with snow in winter.

Frequently asked questions

Do women need to cover their hair in Morocco?
No — it's not required for visitors. Modest clothing is appreciated, and a scarf is handy for sun and sand, but covering hair is a personal choice.
Can I wear shorts in Morocco?
In tourist areas and resorts, yes; in rural areas and medinas, longer clothing is more respectful and sun-smart.
What should I wear for a desert tour?
Light long layers for the day, a warm jacket for the night, a scarf, sunglasses, a hat and closed shoes.
