Luxury Desert Camp Merzouga

Our own private camp deep in the Erg Chebbi dunes — en-suite tents with real beds and hot showers, candle-lit Moroccan dinners, Berber drumming round the fire, and a sky so full of stars you’ll forget your phone.

Location Erg Chebbi dunes, MerzougaArrival Sunset camel trek or 4x4Tents En-suite · real beds · hot showersBoard Dinner & breakfast included

There is a particular kind of magic in sleeping in the dunes — and a particular kind of misery in doing it badly. Our luxury desert camp is built so you get all of the first and none of the second. It sits in a sheltered hollow among the tallest dunes of Erg Chebbi, a comfortable camel ride or short 4x4 hop from our hotel, far enough from the road that the only sounds at night are the wind and the fire.

This is our own camp, not a sub-contracted one. We built it, we staff it with our own team, and we are there to make sure your night in the Sahara is the highlight of your whole Morocco trip — which, judging by our guests, it usually is.

Our tents

Each tent is a proper room, not a sleeping bag under canvas. Walls are lined with hand-woven Berber rugs and kilims, the beds are full-size with crisp linen and plenty of blankets for the cool desert night, and every tent has its own private en-suite bathroom with a flushing toilet and a hot shower. We offer three configurations:

Tent typeSleepsBest for
Standard luxury tent2Couples & solo travellers
Family tent3–4Families & small groups
Honeymoon suite tent2A romantic desert night — rose petals, private dinner

Camp amenities

  • Private en-suite bathroom in every tent — hot shower & flushing toilet
  • Full-size beds with quality linen and extra blankets
  • Solar electricity & lighting in tents and common areas
  • A central dining tent and an open-air majlis lounge around the fire
  • Three-course traditional Moroccan dinner & full breakfast
  • Berber musicians and drumming under the stars
  • Sunset camel trek in and sunrise views out
  • Sandboards available to borrow for the dunes

An evening at the camp

You’ll usually arrive by camel as the sun is setting, the light turning the dunes from gold to deep rose. After settling into your tent and freshening up, mint tea is served as the temperature drops. Dinner is slow and generous — a Berber soup, a tagine cooked over coals, fresh bread, fruit — eaten by lamplight in the dining tent or out under the open sky.

Afterwards the team gathers around the fire with drums, and you’re welcome to join in or just lie back and watch the Milky Way appear. With no light pollution for miles, the stargazing here is genuinely world-class. Many guests drag a blanket onto a dune and stay out long after the fire dies down. In the morning, wake early for sunrise — it is worth every minute of lost sleep.

What our guests say

★★★★★

I expected a tent and a thin mattress. Instead we had a proper bed, an actual hot shower, and the best tagine of the whole trip — in the middle of the Sahara. Watching the stars come out from our own dune is something I’ll never forget.

★★★★★

We did the honeymoon tent and it was beyond romantic — candles, rose petals, a private dinner under the stars. The team was so warm without ever intruding. Worth every penny.

Frequently asked questions

Do the tents really have private bathrooms?

Yes — every luxury tent has its own en-suite bathroom with a flushing toilet and a hot shower. This is genuine glamping, not basic camping.

How do I get to the camp?

Most guests arrive by a sunset camel trek (about an hour) from our hotel in Merzouga; we can also drive you in by 4x4 if you prefer. If you book one of our desert tours, transport to Merzouga is already included.

Is it very cold at night?

Spring and autumn nights are pleasantly cool. Winter (December–February) nights can drop near freezing, but the tents have proper beds with plenty of blankets, and the fire keeps the common area warm. Bring a jumper for the evening.

Can you cater for dietary needs?

Yes — vegetarian, vegan, halal and allergy-aware menus are all easy to arrange. Just let us know in advance.

Is the camp suitable for families and children?

Very much so. Our family tents sleep 3–4, the camel handlers are great with kids, and the open desert is a wonderful place for children. Tell us their ages and we’ll set everything up.

What should I bring for the night?

A warm layer for the evening, comfortable shoes for the sand, a scarf for any wind, and your camera. Everything else — bedding, towels, water, meals — is provided.
