Errachidia sits on the Ziz River in south-east Morocco, roughly 130 km north of Merzouga. Its airport (ERH) has domestic flights from Casablanca, which makes it the fastest way to reach the Sahara if you would rather fly than drive for two or three days. Our Errachidia tours are private, include a night in our luxury desert camp with a camel trek, and can be combined with onward travel to Fes or Marrakech.

The closest airport to the Sahara

Most travellers reach the Erg Chebbi dunes after a long overland trip from Marrakech (about 9 hours, usually spread over two or three days) or Fes (7 to 8 hours). Errachidia changes that. From its airport it is only about 1.5 to 2 hours down the Ziz Valley to Merzouga, so you can land from Casablanca in the morning and be on a camel at sunset the same day. Real driving times are roughly 30 minutes Errachidia to the Ziz Gorges viewpoint, 1 hour to Erfoud, and about 1.5 to 2 hours to Merzouga with a photo stop.

What to expect on the road

The drive south follows the Ziz, a green ribbon of date palms between red cliffs, on a good paved road. There is no rough off-road driving except the short, gentle camel ride into the dunes to reach the camp, which we can swap for a 4x4 transfer. The route is easy for families, couples and older travellers. Days are warm and dry; nights at the camp range from cool in spring and autumn to cold in winter, when temperatures can drop near freezing.

Best time to visit

March to May and September to November give the most comfortable mix of warm days and cool nights. Winter is quiet and the night skies are superb for stars, but pack warm layers. July and August are hot at midday, so we keep the camel trek to sunrise and sunset. The camp has plenty of blankets year-round.

What every multi-day desert tour includes

A private air-conditioned vehicle with fuel and a driver-guide, hotel or kasbah nights on the road, one night in our own luxury camp at Erg Chebbi with a sunset camel trek, and half board at the camp. We collect you from your hotel and confirm the pickup by WhatsApp the night before; bottled water is included, while lunches, entry fees and tips are extra.

How to choose the right tour

Pick by how much time you have and where you start. From Marrakech, 3 days is the classic round trip and 4–5 days add a relaxed day in the dunes and the oases. From Fes, the northern route runs 3–5 days. To travel one-way between two cities without backtracking, choose a Marrakech–Fes crossing.

Best time to visit and what to pack

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable; winter days are pleasant but desert nights are cold, and in summer we ride at sunrise and sunset. Whatever the month, bring light layers, a warm jacket for the night, a scarf, sun protection and closed shoes — the camp provides bedding and blankets.
