HomeThings to Do › Quad Biking

A camel shows you the desert at three kilometres an hour; a quad shows you how big it really is. Twist the throttle and the flat gravel plains that fringe Erg Chebbi open up in every direction — palm groves, dry riverbeds, black volcanic hills and the tan skirts of the dunes themselves. It is the desert's answer to a go-kart track, except the track is the Sahara and the only traffic is the occasional camel. No licence, no experience and no previous nerve required: our guide rides ahead, sets a pace to match the group, and the machines are automatic, so if you can steer a bicycle you can ride one of these.

Where you'll ride

We keep to the firm plains and the lower dune fields on the Merzouga side — terrain that's exciting without being frightening. A typical loop threads between the tamarisk and palm groves on the village edge, past a nomad camp or two, out to a ridge with a wide view over the erg, and back along the base of the big dunes as the sand turns gold. Sunset departures are the pick: cooler air, long shadows, and a sky that runs from apricot to deep violet by the time you're back.

Highlights

  • Ride the plains and dune fields right beside the great Erg Chebbi
  • Automatic quads — nothing to learn beyond throttle and brake
  • Guide out front, safety briefing and helmet included
  • Golden-hour and sunset departures
  • Single quads, or two-up if you'd rather ride pillion

  • Bottled water

Safety, ages & what to wear

Every ride starts with a briefing on a flat practice area, and the guide sets the pace for the least confident rider — nobody gets left behind or pushed. Children can ride two-up behind a parent or the guide; older teens can often take their own quad after the practice loop. Wear closed shoes, sunglasses and a scarf or buff to keep sand out of your eyes and mouth, and long sleeves and trousers to keep the sun off. We supply the helmet.

Combine it into a desert day

Quads pair naturally with the desert's other adrenaline options — a dune buggy for something bigger, a 4x4 excursion to reach the fossils and Gnawa village of Khamlia, or a few runs of sandboarding on the dunes. Finish with a sunset camel trek to our camp and you've had the complete Erg Chebbi day. Browse all things to do in Merzouga.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a licence or experience?
No — no licence and no prior experience are needed. The quads are automatic, the briefing is hands-on, and a guide leads the whole ride at a pace that suits the group.
Can two people share one quad?
Yes. Our quads carry two, so you can ride two-up (great for a child behind a parent) or take one each — the price is per quad either way.
Is quad biking in Merzouga safe?
Yes. Helmets, a proper briefing and a guide are all included, and we keep to firm, open terrain rather than steep dune faces. The guide always matches the speed to the least confident rider.
What's the minimum age?
Young children ride two-up behind an adult or the guide. Confident teenagers can usually ride solo after the practice loop — tell us their ages and we'll advise.
When is the best time to ride?
Late afternoon and sunset are the favourites — cooler air, softer light and long shadows over the dunes. In summer we avoid the midday heat.
