Itinerary
Day 1Day 1: Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Draa Valley
Morning. Pickup ~7:30 am and over the High Atlas (Tizi n'Tichka, 2,260 m) with a panoramic tea stop. Midday: the UNESCO kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou and lunch overlooking the ksar (own account).
Afternoon. Ouarzazate, then south into the palm-lined Draa Valley, Morocco's longest river oasis. Evening: kasbah-hotel night. Travel: ~6–7 h · ~340 km. Tip: the Draa's palm groves glow beautifully in late-afternoon light. Dinner & breakfast.
Day 2Day 2: Draa Valley → Agdz → Zagora → Tansikht → Rissani → Merzouga
Morning. Down the Draa through Agdz and the kasbahs to Zagora, the legendary 'Timbuktu 52 days' signpost on the old caravan road. History: this was the gateway for trans-Saharan trade caravans.
Afternoon. East via Tansikht and Rissani (the ancestral home of the Alaouite dynasty) to Merzouga and the first sight of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Evening: overnight at the desert hotel. Travel: ~6 h · ~360 km. Dinner & breakfast.
Day 3Day 3: Merzouga — desert exploration → sunset camel trek → luxury camp
Day. A relaxed morning, then a 4x4 excursion to nomad families, the Gnawa-music village of Khamlia and fossil fields, or time by the pool with dune views. Evening: sunset camel trek into Erg Chebbi to our private luxury camp, with dinner, Berber drumming and stargazing. Accommodation: private en-suite tent. Tip: bring a warm layer and a small overnight bag. Dinner & breakfast.
Day 4Day 4: Sahara sunrise → Todra Gorge → Dades Valley
Morning. Sunrise over the dunes, breakfast, then north-west to the Todra Gorge (300 m walls) with time to walk the canyon. Afternoon: the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs to the Dades Valley and its dramatic gorge. Evening: kasbah-hotel night. Travel: ~5 h · ~300 km. Dinner & breakfast.
Day 5Day 5: Dades → Tinghir → Midelt → Ziz Valley → Middle Atlas
Day. North through the high plateau and Midelt (apple country, between the High and Middle Atlas), into the cedar forests where Barbary apes live near Azrou. Scenic route: a complete change of landscape from desert to alpine. Evening: overnight near Midelt or the Middle Atlas. Travel: ~5 h. Dinner & breakfast.
Day 6Day 6: Middle Atlas → Ifrane → Fes
Morning. Through Ifrane, 'the Switzerland of Morocco' with its alpine chalets, and the cedar forest of Azrou for a last look at the Barbary apes. Arrival: Fes by early afternoon — a perfect end point if you're exploring the imperial city or flying out. Travel: ~3–4 h · ~200 km. Tip: add a night in Fes to explore its medina. Breakfast.

What to pack

Hotel Les Roches is our own — we were born at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes and have run it since 2004. You deal with the same family that owns the hotel, runs the desert camp and leads the camels, so there is no agency markup, nothing is subcontracted, and the price you are quoted is the price you pay.
What a night at our camp is like
After the sunset camel trek you reach our private camp as the sky turns from gold to deep blue. The tents are proper rooms — a real bed with warm blankets and an en-suite hot shower — and dinner is a home-cooked tagine under the stars, followed by Berber drums around the fire. With no light for a hundred kilometres the Milky Way is astonishing, and you wake early to climb a dune for sunrise.

How comfortable is the desert camp?
Very — our private luxury camp at Erg Chebbi has en-suite tents with real beds, hot showers, private bathrooms, rugs and plenty of blankets for the cool desert night, plus a Berber dinner under the stars.
Are your tours private or shared?
Every tour is private by default — your own vehicle, driver-guide and flexible pace. Shared group departures are offered only on the Marrakech–Merzouga–Marrakech and Marrakech–Merzouga–Fes routes.
Is the tour suitable for families and older travellers?
Yes. The pace is gentle, the camel ride is optional (we can drive you to camp by 4x4 instead), and we adapt for children and any mobility needs — just tell us when you book.
When is the best time of year to travel?
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most comfortable, with warm days and cool nights. Winter nights are cold and summer is hot at midday, so we run camel treks at sunrise and sunset.
