Morocco 7-Day Itinerary — Marrakech, the Sahara & Fes
The ideal first week in Morocco: the Red City, the High Atlas, the kasbah valleys, a night in the Erg Chebbi dunes and the medieval medina of Fes — all at an unhurried private pace.
Introduction
This 7-day Morocco itinerary is our most popular one-week route and the ideal introduction to the country. It runs privately from Marrakech to Fes — over the High Atlas, through Aït Ben Haddou and the great gorges to a night in the Erg Chebbi dunes, then north through the cedar forests to the medieval medina of Fes. Below is the complete day-by-day plan, honest pricing, what's included, the best time to travel and everything else you need to plan with confidence.
Overview
Seven days is the sweet spot for a first trip to Morocco. It's long enough to pair the two great imperial cities — Marrakech and Fes — with a genuine night in the Sahara and the spectacular gorge-and-kasbah country in between, yet short enough to fit a single week's holiday. This private, one-way itinerary runs from Marrakech to Fes so you never retrace a road: every day opens onto somewhere new, from the palm-fringed Red City to the 300-metre walls of the Todra Gorge and the orange dunes of Erg Chebbi.
We run it as a fully private guided tour — your own vehicle, your own Berber driver-guide, hand-picked riads and one standout night in our own luxury desert camp. It's a framework, not a fixed coach tour: tell us your dates and interests and we shape each day around you.

Itinerary
Day 1Day 1: Arrive in Marrakech — the Red City
Arrival & welcome. We meet you at Marrakech airport or your riad and help you settle in. Depending on your arrival time, the afternoon is yours to begin exploring the Red City.
What to see. The Koutoubia minaret, the labyrinth of souks, the Bahia Palace and the Saadian Tombs, ending at the legendary square of Jemaa el-Fnaa as it fills with storytellers, musicians and food stalls at dusk. Culture: Marrakech has been a caravan crossroads for nearly a thousand years, and the medina still runs to that rhythm.
Evening & accommodation. A night in a traditional riad in the medina. Insider tip: eat dinner on a rooftop terrace overlooking Jemaa el-Fnaa for the best view of the spectacle. Overnight in Marrakech.
Day 2Day 2: Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley
Morning. We leave Marrakech early and climb the High Atlas by the switchbacks of the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), stopping for mint tea and photographs of the red-earth Berber villages clinging to the slopes.
Midday — Aït Ben Haddou. The UNESCO-listed earthen ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, a caravan stronghold since the 11th century and the backdrop of Gladiator and Game of Thrones. We cross the river and climb its lanes to the granary at the top.
Afternoon. On to Ouarzazate, Morocco's film capital, then east along the Valley of the Roses and the Skoura palm oasis to the Dades Valley. Evening & accommodation: a kasbah-style hotel with a home-style dinner. Travel time: ~6–7 h with stops · distance: ~330 km. Insider tip: sit on the left in the morning for the best Atlas views. Dinner & breakfast included.
Day 3Day 3: Dades Gorge → Todra Gorge → Erfoud → Merzouga (sunset camel trek & desert camp)
Morning. The dramatic Dades Gorge with its 'monkey-finger' rock formations and famous hairpin road, then across to the soaring Todra Gorge near Tinghir, where 300-metre walls narrow to barely ten metres over a cold river — time to walk the canyon floor.
Afternoon. Through Erfoud and Rissani, famous for dates and marine fossils, until the Erg Chebbi dunes rise on the horizon at Merzouga.
Evening — camel trek & camp. A sunset camel trek about an hour into the dunes to our private luxury camp — dinner, Berber drumming and a sky thick with stars. Accommodation: a private en-suite tent with a real bed and hot shower. Travel time: ~5 h driving + 1 h camel · distance: ~300 km. Dinner & breakfast at camp.
Day 4Day 4: Sahara sunrise → a morning among the nomads → Merzouga
Morning. Wake for sunrise over the dunes — the sand shifts from grey to rose to burning orange in minutes — then ride back for breakfast. A relaxed 4x4 morning visits nomad families, the Gnawa music village of Khamlia and the fossil fields, with the option to sandboard the dunes.
Afternoon. Cool off at the hotel pool with dune views, or add an quad ride. Cultural experience: share mint tea with a nomad family and hear how desert life follows the seasons. Evening & accommodation: a desert hotel in Merzouga. Insider tip: the golden hour before sunset is the finest light for photography. Breakfast & dinner included.
Day 5Day 5: Merzouga → Midelt → the Middle Atlas cedar forests → Fes
Morning. The long, scenic drive north begins up the palm-lined Ziz Valley and over the high plateau to Midelt, the 'apple town' between two Atlas ranges, for lunch.
Afternoon. Into the Middle Atlas: the cedar forest near Azrou, home to wild Barbary macaques, and the alpine-looking town of Ifrane, before descending to Fes.
Evening & accommodation. A traditional riad in the Fes medina. Travel time: ~7–8 h with stops · distance: ~470 km. Insider tip: this is the longest driving day — settle in, and watch the landscape change from desert to cedar forest. Breakfast included.
Day 6Day 6: Fes — a guided day in the medieval medina
Morning. A local guide leads you into Fes el-Bali, the largest car-free urban area in the world and a UNESCO site: the Al-Qarawiyyin mosque-university (founded 859 AD), the exquisite Bou Inania and Attarine madrasas, and the famous chouara tanneries seen from a leather-shop balcony.
Afternoon. Free time to get pleasantly lost among the coppersmiths, weavers and spice souks, or relax at your riad. Culture & history: Fes has been Morocco's spiritual and intellectual heart for over 1,200 years. Evening & accommodation: second night in the Fes medina. Insider tip: accept the sprig of mint at the tannery door — it helps with the smell. Breakfast included.
Day 7Day 7: Departure from Fes
Morning. A relaxed breakfast before we transfer you to Fes airport or the train station for your onward journey. Insider tip: if your flight is late, we can arrange a half-day extension — a trip to nearby Meknes and Roman Volubilis, or Chefchaouen — just ask. Breakfast included.
Want to keep going? This route extends naturally into our 10-day grand tour with Chefchaouen and the north.

Accommodation
You spend six nights: a riad in Marrakech, a kasbah-style hotel in the Dades Valley, a desert hotel and one night in our private luxury camp at Erg Chebbi (en-suite tent, real bed, hot shower), and two nights in a traditional riad in the Fes medina. A decorated honeymoon tent and family tents are available — see the desert camp page.
Transport
Travel is by private air-conditioned 4x4 or modern minivan with fuel and an experienced English-speaking Berber driver-guide for the whole week. All roads are paved and in good condition; the only off-tarmac travel is the gentle camel ride into the camp, which we can replace with a 4x4 transfer. Day 5 (Merzouga to Fes) is the longest drive — broken up with stops in Midelt and the cedar forest.
Pick-up & meeting point
We collect you from Marrakech airport or your riad on Day 1 and finish with a drop-off at Fes airport or train station on Day 7; pickup times are confirmed by WhatsApp the night before. Prefer to start from Casablanca? We can begin there instead — just ask.

Best time to travel
This itinerary runs year-round, with spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) the most comfortable — warm days and cool desert nights. Winter days are pleasant but nights near Erg Chebbi can drop close to freezing, so bring a warm layer; July and August are hot at midday, so we time the camel trek for sunrise and sunset. See our Morocco weather guide.
What to pack
Pack light layers for warm days and a warm jacket for cool desert nights, a scarf for sun and sand, closed shoes for the medinas and gorges, sunglasses, a hat, high-SPF sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, a head-torch, a power bank and a swimsuit for the hotel pool. For the camp night, a small overnight bag is easier than a full suitcase. Full list: Morocco packing list.
Travel tips
Insider tips: keep your onward flight from Fes to the evening of Day 7 or later; carry small dirham notes for lunches, tips and entry fees, as ATMs are scarce past Ouarzazate; and hire the local Fes guide we include — the medina's thousands of lanes are genuinely bewildering without one. Short on time? Consider the 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour instead; with more days, add the north on our 10-day grand tour.
How booking works
Tell us your dates, group size and starting city by the enquiry form or WhatsApp and you hear back personally, usually within a few hours, with a clear all-in price. A small deposit holds your dates and you pay the balance on arrival, so you never prepay in full. Free cancellation up to 7 days before departure, and we confirm your pickup by WhatsApp the night before.
Booking direct with our Berber family
Hotel Les Roches is our own — we were born at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes and have run it since 2004. You deal with the same family that owns the hotel, runs the desert camp and leads the camels, so there is no agency markup, nothing is subcontracted, and the price you are quoted is the price you pay.
What a night at our camp is like
After the sunset camel trek you reach our private camp as the sky turns from gold to deep blue. The tents are proper rooms — a real bed with warm blankets and an en-suite hot shower — and dinner is a home-cooked tagine under the stars, followed by Berber drums around the fire. With no light for a hundred kilometres the Milky Way is astonishing, and you wake early to climb a dune for sunrise.
What our guests say
Simple but clean room, very nice staff and excellent food — I never ate such a good tajine before. The sand dunes are just a stone's throw away. Recommended!
The best food we had all trip — highly recommend eating dinner here, it is truly delicious. The rooms are comfortable and the pool is a treat. We also did the one-night desert camp stay.
The staff were very friendly and always ready to help. The hotel organized a fantastic camel tour and an overnight stay in the desert — a unique experience. The dunes start right behind the house.
