This is the practical companion to our complete Merzouga guide — everything logistical you need to actually get to the Sahara and make the most of it, from driving times to what to wear.
Where is Merzouga?
Merzouga is in south-east Morocco (about 31.1°N, 4.0°W), in the Drâa-Tafilalet region at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes, near Rissani and Erfoud and not far from the Algerian border.
How to get to Merzouga from Marrakech
Around 560 km / 9 hours by road over the Tizi n'Tichka pass. Almost nobody does it in one go — it is spread over a 3-day tour with stops at Aït Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and the gorges.
How to get to Merzouga from Fes
Around 470 km / 7–8 hours through Ifrane, the Middle Atlas cedar forests, Midelt and the Ziz Valley — the basis of our 3-day Fes tour.
How to get to Merzouga from Casablanca
Casablanca is the furthest of the three, usually combined with Rabat, Meknes and Fes on a longer Casablanca desert tour rather than driven straight through.
Nearest airports
The closest airport is Errachidia (ERH), about 2 hours away, followed by Ouarzazate (OZZ), about 4–5 hours. Most international visitors fly into Marrakech (RAK) or Fes (FEZ) and travel overland on a tour.
Getting around Merzouga
Merzouga village is small and walkable. To reach the dunes, nomad camps and Khamlia you will want a camel, a quad or a 4x4 — all easily arranged. If you arrive on a tour, your driver-guide handles all transport.
Nearby attractions
Beyond the dunes, don't miss the Sunday Rissani market, the fossil workshops of Erfoud, and the Gnawa music village of Khamlia. Learn more about the people of the region in our Berber culture guide.
Merzouga weather & best time to visit
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable; winter days are sunny but nights are cold; summer is hot at midday. Full detail is in our best time to visit Merzouga guide.
What to wear in the desert
Light, breathable layers by day; a warm jacket, scarf and closed shoes for the cold desert nights. A hat, sunglasses and high-SPF cream are essential year-round. See the full Morocco desert packing list.
Desert safety tips
Drink plenty of water, protect against the sun, keep a warm layer for the night, and always ride camels, quads and 4x4s with a proper guide. Keep some cash in small dirham notes for tips and market stalls, as ATMs are scarce once you leave the main towns.
