3-Day Tour from Fes to Merzouga

From Fes through the Middle Atlas and Ziz Valley to the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Duration 3 days / 2 nightsRoute Fes → MerzougaGroup Private 2–12Camp night Luxury Erg ChebbiFrom €450 / person

Introduction

The 3-day Fes to Merzouga tour is the classic way to reach the Sahara from Morocco's spiritual capital. Where the Marrakech route crosses the High Atlas, this one takes the scenic northern road — through the alpine town of Ifrane, the cedar forests and Barbary apes of Azrou, and the striking Ziz Valley with its endless date palms — before delivering you to the great dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga. It's a journey of dramatic contrasts, from mountain forest to red gorge to golden sand, and it ends with a camel trek and a night in our private luxury desert camp. Below is the full day-by-day itinerary, real pricing, what's included, the best time to travel and our team's planning tips.

Overview

Starting in Fes, this 3-day tour takes the scenic northern road to the Sahara — through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, past the Barbary apes of Azrou, and down the spectacular Ziz Valley to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. It can finish back in Fes or continue to Marrakech.

Why choose this tour

Why choose the Fes to Merzouga route:

  • Different, quieter scenery. Ifrane, the cedar forests, the Barbary apes and the Ziz Valley — landscapes the busier Marrakech route never sees.
  • Perfect for one-way trips. Start in Fes and finish in Fes, or continue to Marrakech via the gorges — ideal if your flights use different cities.
  • Owned and run by us at Erg Chebbi — the camp, the camels and the guides are all our own team.
  • Private and flexible with genuine comfort: a desert hotel night and a private en-suite luxury tent.

Highlights

  • Middle Atlas cedar forests & Azrou's Barbary apes
  • Ifrane, 'the Switzerland of Morocco'
  • The dramatic Ziz Valley & palm oases
  • Sunset camel trek & luxury desert camp
  • Erg Chebbi sunrise
  • Optional finish in Marrakech

Itinerary

Day 1Day 1: Fes → Ifrane → Azrou cedar forest → Midelt → Ziz Valley → Merzouga

Morning. Pickup from your Fes accommodation around 8:00 am and south into the Middle Atlas. First stop is Ifrane, the surprising alpine town nicknamed 'the Switzerland of Morocco' for its chalets and clean mountain air, then the cedar forest near Azrou, home to troops of Barbary apes you can watch among the trees. Photography: the cedars and the apes make for unusual, un-Sahara-like shots.

Midday — Midelt & the descent south. We continue to Midelt, Morocco's apple capital between the Middle and High Atlas, where we stop for lunch (own account). History & culture: this old mining and market town is a meeting point of Berber tribes and a gateway between the mountains and the desert.

Afternoon — the Ziz Valley. The drive south through the Ziz Gorges and the palm-filled Ziz Valley is one of the most beautiful in Morocco — a ribbon of date palms winding between red cliffs, with a panoramic viewpoint where we stop for photos. We pass Errachidia and Erfoud before the dunes of Erg Chebbi appear at Merzouga.

Evening & accommodation. Arrive at our desert hotel at the foot of the dunes, freshen up and enjoy a Moroccan dinner. Travel time: ~7–8 hours with stops · distance: ~470 km. Insider tip: it's a long but spectacular driving day — bring a downloaded playlist and a snack, and keep your camera handy for the Ziz viewpoint. Dinner & breakfast included.

Day 2Day 2: Merzouga desert day → sunset camel trek → luxury desert camp

Morning. A relaxed start after yesterday's drive. Activities: an optional 4x4 excursion to nomad families, the Gnawa-music village of Khamlia, fossil fields and the seasonal Dayet Srij lake; or simply relax by the pool with dune views and try sandboarding.

Cultural experience. Khamlia's musicians, descendants of sub-Saharan peoples, play hypnotic Gnawa rhythms — one of the most memorable cultural stops in the region, often over a glass of mint tea.

Evening — camel trek & camp. As the heat softens you mount your camel for a roughly one-hour sunset trek over the dunes to our private luxury camp, arriving in time to watch the sun set from a high ridge. Dinner is served in the Berber tent, followed by drumming around the fire and exceptional stargazing. Accommodation: a private en-suite tent with a real bed and hot shower. Insider tip: bring a warm layer and a small overnight bag. Dinner & breakfast included.

Day 3Day 3: Sahara sunrise → Merzouga → return to Fes (or onward to Marrakech)

Morning. Wake for a sunrise over Erg Chebbi — the sand glowing from grey to gold — then ride or walk back to the hotel for breakfast and a shower.

The return. We retrace the Ziz Valley and Middle Atlas back toward Fes, with photo and tea stops and lunch en route (own account). Prefer to continue south? We can instead route you toward Marrakech via the Todra and Dades gorges and Ait Ben Haddou — a popular one-way option (ask when booking).

Arrival. Back in Fes by early evening. Travel time: ~7–8 hours with stops · distance: ~470 km. Insider tip: if you're flying out of Fes, book your flight for the following day or late evening to be safe. Breakfast included.

Transport is by private air-conditioned 4x4 or minivan with fuel and an experienced English/French/Spanish-speaking driver-guide throughout. Best time to travel

The Fes route runs year-round, with spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) the most comfortable. Note that the Middle Atlas around Ifrane sits at altitude and can be cold or even snowy in winter, so pack a warm layer in the colder months. See our best time to visit the Sahara guide for a month-by-month breakdown.

What to pack

Bring light layers for warm days and a warm jacket for cool desert and mountain nights, a scarf for sun and sand, closed shoes, sunglasses, a hat, high-SPF sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, a head-torch, a power bank and a swimsuit for the pool. Pack a small overnight bag for the camp night. Full list: Morocco packing list.

Travel tips

Insider tips: Day 1 is a long drive, so eat a good breakfast and keep snacks handy; carry small dirham notes for lunches, tips and entry fees, as ATMs are scarce south of Midelt; and if you want to see both the Fes and Marrakech routes, do this tour one-way and finish in Marrakech via the gorges. Looking to continue to Marrakech with more time? See our Fes desert tours hub.

How booking works

Tell us your dates, group size and starting city by the enquiry form or WhatsApp and you hear back personally, usually within a few hours, with a clear all-in price. A small deposit holds your dates and you pay the balance on arrival, so you never prepay in full. Free cancellation up to 7 days before departure, and we confirm your pickup by WhatsApp the night before.

Booking direct with our Berber family

Hotel Les Roches is our own — we were born at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes and have run it since 2004. You deal with the same family that owns the hotel, runs the desert camp and leads the camels, so there is no agency markup, nothing is subcontracted, and the price you are quoted is the price you pay.

What a night at our camp is like

After the sunset camel trek you reach our private camp as the sky turns from gold to deep blue. The tents are proper rooms — a real bed with warm blankets and an en-suite hot shower — and dinner is a home-cooked tagine under the stars, followed by Berber drums around the fire. With no light for a hundred kilometres the Milky Way is astonishing, and you wake early to climb a dune for sunrise.

What our guests say

★★★★★

The best part were the activities: a quad tour was arranged for us in minutes, and we took a jeep tour the next day with guide Asis, who was awesome and led us to a nomad camp. Highly recommend!

Hassan and the hosts made me feel at home. The food was like a culinary journey and the location against the Sahara dunes was stunning. Watching the sunset over the dunes was a magical moment.

A great experience at Auberge Les Roches and their camp. The camel desert ride and camping experience was amazing. Special mention for their food and the friendliness of the guys at the camp.

Frequently asked questions

Can the tour end in Marrakech instead of Fes?
Yes — many travellers continue to Marrakech via the gorges; just tell us when booking.
Is the Fes route as scenic as Marrakech?
Different but just as beautiful — cedar forests, Ifrane and the Ziz Valley instead of the High Atlas.
Is the luxury camp included?
Yes, with camel trek, dinner and breakfast.
What time is pick-up?
Around 7:30–8:00 am from your Fes accommodation.
How far is Merzouga from Marrakech, and how long is the drive?
It's about 560 km and 8–9 hours over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, which is why the journey is spread over 2–3 days with stops at Aït Ben Haddou, the gorges and the Ziz Valley rather than driven in one go.
How comfortable is the desert camp?
Very — our private luxury camp at Erg Chebbi has en-suite tents with real beds, hot showers, private bathrooms, rugs and plenty of blankets for the cool desert night, plus a Berber dinner under the stars.
Are your tours private or shared?
Every tour is private by default — your own vehicle, driver-guide and flexible pace. Shared group departures are offered only on the Marrakech–Merzouga–Marrakech and Marrakech–Merzouga–Fes routes.
Is the tour suitable for families and older travellers?
Yes. The pace is gentle, the camel ride is optional (we can drive you to camp by 4x4 instead), and we adapt for children and any mobility needs — just tell us when you book.
When is the best time of year to travel?
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most comfortable, with warm days and cool nights. Winter nights are cold and summer is hot at midday, so we run camel treks at sunrise and sunset.
