Short answer: for the tallest, most spectacular dunes with the easiest access, choose Erg Chebbi at Merzouga (dunes up to ±150 m, reached on a paved road, ~9 h from Marrakech). Zagora is closer to Marrakech (~7 h) but its dunes are small and stony — better if you're very short on time. Erg Chigaga has huge, remote dunes rivalling Erg Chebbi but needs a long 4x4 track to reach, so it suits adventurous travellers with more days.

What's the difference between them?

All three are in southern Morocco, but they're very different experiences. Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) and Erg Chigaga (near M'hamid, beyond Zagora) are true ergs — great seas of tall sand dunes. The 'Zagora desert' most day-trippers see is a smaller, rockier dune area much closer to the road.

Which should you choose?

For most people, Merzouga wins: the biggest dunes you can reach without a rough drive, the best sunrise from a high crest, and everything (camel treks, luxury camp, 4x4) on tap. Choose Zagora only if you truly can't spare the extra day, and Erg Chigaga if remoteness and the very biggest dunes matter more than convenience. Our tours all go to Erg Chebbi at Merzouga; we can arrange a custom Erg Chigaga route on request.

How long do you need?

Merzouga is comfortably done as a 3-day tour from Marrakech or a 3-day tour from Fes. Zagora fits a 2-day trip. Erg Chigaga realistically needs 3–4 days because of the extra driving and off-road section.
