Shared vs Private Desert Tour: An Honest Comparison

Shared vs private Morocco desert tour: real differences in price, flexibility, group size and comfort, and which to choose. Honest advice from a local Merzouga operator.

HomeTravel Guide › Shared vs Private Desert Tour

The honest answer: choose a shared tour (from €180 per person) if you're budget-conscious, travelling solo or as a couple and happy on a fixed daily schedule with up to 17 others. Choose a private tour (from €450 per person) if you want your own vehicle, your own pace, flexible stops and the freedom to finish in a different city. We offer shared only on the Marrakech↔Merzouga and Marrakech→Fes routes; everything else is private.

What's the real difference?

A shared tour is a set departure: a minibus of up to 17 people, a fixed route and timings, and a lower price. A private tour is just your group in your own vehicle, so you decide the pace, linger where you're curious, add a night, or change the finishing city. The desert experience (camel trek, camp) is the same quality on both.

Which should you choose?

Solo travellers and couples on a budget who don't mind a set schedule get great value from a shared Marrakech–Fes tour or a shared 3-day Marrakech round trip. Families, groups of friends, and anyone who wants to control the pace or add a second desert night should choose a private tour. For families specifically, see our family desert tours.

Is the camp and camel trek the same on both?

Yes — shared and private guests both stay at our own luxury camp with en-suite tents and do the same sunset camel trek. The difference is the vehicle and the flexibility of the road part, not the desert experience.

Frequently asked questions

Is a private or shared desert tour better?
It depends on your priorities: shared is cheaper (from €180pp) with a fixed schedule and up to 17 people; private (from €450pp) gives your own vehicle, flexible pace and route. The desert experience is the same.
How many people are on a shared desert tour?
Up to 17 travellers in an air-conditioned minibus, with daily departures on the Marrakech routes.
Which desert tours can be shared?
Only the Marrakech→Merzouga→Marrakech round trip and the Marrakech→Merzouga→Fes one-way. All other itineraries are private.
Is a private tour worth the extra cost?
For families, groups and anyone who values flexibility and comfort, yes — you set the pace, add stops or nights, and the per-person price drops as your group grows.
Is the desert camp the same on shared and private tours?
Yes — both stay at our own luxury en-suite camp and do the same sunset camel trek; only the vehicle and road flexibility differ.
