4 Days Casablanca to Merzouga Desert Tour — Coast to Sahara

Land in Casablanca and be on the Erg Chebbi dunes by day two — imperial Fes, cedar forests, a desert camp night and the great gorges, finishing in Marrakech.

Duration 4 days / 3 nightsRoute Casablanca → Fes → Merzouga → MarrakechGroup Private 2–14Camp night Luxury Erg ChebbiFrom €550 / person

Introduction

The 4-day Casablanca to Merzouga desert tour is the most efficient way to pair a Casablanca arrival with a genuine night in the Sahara. Instead of a there-and-back slog, it runs as a one-way crossing — Casablanca to Fes to the Erg Chebbi dunes and on to Marrakech — so every day delivers a completely new landscape. Below is the full day-by-day itinerary, honest pricing, what's included, the best time to travel and everything else you need to plan with confidence.

Overview

This is the fastest way to turn a Casablanca arrival into a real Sahara adventure. Rather than doubling back to the coast, the 4-day Casablanca to Merzouga tour runs one way across the country — north to the imperial city of Fes, up over the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, down the Ziz Valley to the dunes of Erg Chebbi, then west through the great gorges and kasbah country to finish in Marrakech. In four days you cross three worlds: the Atlantic city, the medieval medina and the deep desert.

Because we finish in Marrakech, none of your time is wasted retracing the same road — every hour moves you somewhere new. It's the itinerary we recommend most for travellers who fly into Casablanca but out of Marrakech (or vice-versa) and want the Sahara in the middle.

Why choose this tour

Why this Casablanca desert tour works so well:

  • No backtracking. A one-way route from the coast to Marrakech means four days of new country, not the same road twice.
  • You reach the dunes fast. You're riding a camel into Erg Chebbi on the evening of day two.
  • Owned end to end. Our family owns the desert hotel, the camp and the camels — no broker, no subcontracting.
  • Built around your flights. Ideal for an open-jaw Casablanca-in, Marrakech-out ticket.

Highlights

  • Hassan II Mosque and the Atlantic in Casablanca
  • Fes — the world's largest living medieval medina
  • Ifrane and the Azrou cedar forest with its Barbary macaques
  • The Ziz Valley palm oasis and the road to the dunes
  • Sunset camel trek and a night in a luxury Erg Chebbi camp
  • Todra Gorge's 300-metre walls and the Dades switchbacks
  • Aït Ben Haddou and the High Atlas on the way to Marrakech

Itinerary

Day 1Day 1: Casablanca → Rabat → Meknes → Fes

Morning. We collect you in Casablanca and begin with the colossal Hassan II Mosque, rising straight out of the Atlantic — one of the largest mosques on earth and open to visitors between prayer times. Then north along the coast to Rabat, Morocco's calm capital, for the Kasbah of the Udayas, the unfinished Hassan Tower and the Chellah necropolis.

Afternoon. We continue to Meknes, the 17th-century imperial city of Sultan Moulay Ismail, pausing at the monumental Bab Mansour gate before the short hop to Fes.

Evening & accommodation. Check in to a traditional riad in the Fes medina and settle in with a Moroccan dinner. Travel time: ~4 h driving with stops · distance: ~330 km. Insider tip: ask your riad for its rooftop at sunset — the call to prayer rolling across the medina is unforgettable. Dinner & overnight in Fes.

Day 2Day 2: Fes → Ifrane → Azrou cedar forest → Ziz Valley → Merzouga (camel trek & camp)

Morning. Leave Fes and climb into the Middle Atlas. Coffee in Ifrane — an alpine-looking town nicknamed 'little Switzerland' — then the cedar forest near Azrou, home to troops of wild Barbary macaques.

Afternoon. Over the Midelt plateau and down the dramatic Ziz Valley, a ribbon of tens of thousands of date palms between red cliffs, with a viewpoint stop before the desert town of Erfoud.

Evening — camel trek & camp. At Merzouga the Erg Chebbi dunes rise ahead. You swap the vehicle for a camel and ride about an hour into the sand to our private luxury camp for sunset, dinner and Berber drumming under the stars. Accommodation: a private en-suite tent with a real bed. Travel time: ~7 h driving + 1 h camel · distance: ~470 km. Dinner & breakfast at camp.

Day 3Day 3: Sahara sunrise → Rissani → Todra Gorge → Dades Valley

Morning. Wake early for sunrise over Erg Chebbi — the dunes turn from grey to rose to burning orange in twenty minutes — then ride back for breakfast. On the way west we pass Rissani, cradle of the ruling Alaouite dynasty and home to one of Morocco's most authentic Berber markets.

Afternoon. The Todra Gorge near Tinghir, where sheer walls rise 300 metres and close to barely ten metres apart over a cold river — time to walk the canyon floor — then into the Dades Valley, the 'Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs'.

Evening & accommodation. A kasbah-style hotel in the Dades with valley views and a home-style dinner. Travel time: ~5 h with stops · distance: ~300 km. Insider tip: the Dades gorge road just above the hotel has the famous hairpin bends — worth the ten-minute drive up for photos. Dinner & breakfast included.

Day 4Day 4: Dades → Roses Valley → Ouarzazate → Aït Ben Haddou → Marrakech

Morning. Through the Valley of the Roses (source of Morocco's rose water) and the Skoura palm oasis to Ouarzazate, the 'door of the desert' and home of the Atlas Film Studios.

Midday. The unmissable Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed earthen ksar that has starred in Gladiator and Game of Thrones — we cross the river and climb its lanes to the granary at the top.

Afternoon — arrival. The final climb over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m) and down into Marrakech, where the tour ends at your hotel by early evening. Travel time: ~7 h with stops · distance: ~430 km. Insider tip: keep any onward flight from Marrakech to late evening on Day 4 or the following morning. Breakfast included.

Best time to travel

This tour runs all year. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) bring warm days and cool nights and are ideal for both the Fes medina and the dunes. Winter days are clear and pleasant but desert nights are cold, so pack a warm layer; July and August are hot, so we time the camel treks for sunrise and sunset. For a month-by-month view see our Morocco weather guide.

What to pack

Bring light layers for the day and a warm jacket for the desert night, a scarf for sun and blowing sand, closed walking shoes for the medina and gorges, sunglasses, a hat, high-SPF sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, a head-torch and a power bank. Modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered) is appreciated for the Hassan II Mosque and Fes medina. Full checklist: Morocco packing list.

Travel tips

Insider tips: book the Hassan II Mosque interior visit for a morning slot as queues build later; carry small dirham notes for tips, the Rissani market and gorge cafés; and pack an overnight bag for the camp so you can leave your main case in the vehicle. Want Chefchaouen's blue city and a second desert morning as well? Step up to the 6-day Casablanca to Marrakech tour.

How booking works

Tell us your dates, group size and starting city by the enquiry form or WhatsApp and you hear back personally, usually within a few hours, with a clear all-in price. A small deposit holds your dates and you pay the balance on arrival, so you never prepay in full. Free cancellation up to 7 days before departure, and we confirm your pickup by WhatsApp the night before.

Booking direct with our Berber family

Hotel Les Roches is our own — we were born at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes and have run it since 2004. You deal with the same family that owns the hotel, runs the desert camp and leads the camels, so there is no agency markup, nothing is subcontracted, and the price you are quoted is the price you pay.

What a night at our camp is like

After the sunset camel trek you reach our private camp as the sky turns from gold to deep blue. The tents are proper rooms — a real bed with warm blankets and an en-suite hot shower — and dinner is a home-cooked tagine under the stars, followed by Berber drums around the fire. With no light for a hundred kilometres the Milky Way is astonishing, and you wake early to climb a dune for sunrise.

What our guests say

★★★★★

The hotel organizes their own camel tours. The service is very professional and the camp is lovely. In the morning there was a great breakfast — probably the best we had in Morocco.

★★★★★

A wonderful stay at the foot of the dunes. Camel ride and 4x4 excursion with sunset views. A very warm welcome, impeccable service, and excellent tagines and couscous.

Audrey Stephan · Google · 2025
★★★★★

Simple but clean room, very nice staff and excellent food — I never ate such a good tajine before. The sand dunes are just a stone's throw away. Recommended!

Frequently asked questions

Is 4 days enough to see the desert from Casablanca?
Yes, if you travel one way and finish in Marrakech as this itinerary does — you reach Erg Chebbi on day two and still see Fes, the gorges and Aït Ben Haddou. If you must return to Casablanca, choose our 6-day tour or a longer 7-day circuit.
Can the tour finish in Casablanca instead of Marrakech?
It can, but adding the return leg makes it a 5–6 day trip. For a Casablanca round-trip, the longer circuits are more comfortable.
Which airport should I book?
Fly into Casablanca (CMN) and out of Marrakech (RAK) — this one-way route is built for exactly that. We can also start from Casablanca airport directly.
Is the desert camp really private and en-suite?
Yes — our own camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes, with private tents, real beds and hot showers. See the camp page for photos and detail.
Do you run this tour year-round?
Yes. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable; see the best-time section below and our guide to the best time to visit the Sahara.
How far is Merzouga from Marrakech, and how long is the drive?
It's about 560 km and 8–9 hours over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, which is why the journey is spread over 2–3 days with stops at Aït Ben Haddou, the gorges and the Ziz Valley rather than driven in one go.
How comfortable is the desert camp?
Very — our private luxury camp at Erg Chebbi has en-suite tents with real beds, hot showers, private bathrooms, rugs and plenty of blankets for the cool desert night, plus a Berber dinner under the stars.
Are your tours private or shared?
Every tour is private by default — your own vehicle, driver-guide and flexible pace. Shared group departures are offered only on the Marrakech–Merzouga–Marrakech and Marrakech–Merzouga–Fes routes.
Is the tour suitable for families and older travellers?
Yes. The pace is gentle, the camel ride is optional (we can drive you to camp by 4x4 instead), and we adapt for children and any mobility needs — just tell us when you book.
When is the best time of year to travel?
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the most comfortable, with warm days and cool nights. Winter nights are cold and summer is hot at midday, so we run camel treks at sunrise and sunset.
