The best Merzouga trips usually combine a comfortable hotel room by the pool with at least one night in a desert camp out among the dunes. This guide compares both so you can decide what suits your trip — and, honestly, most guests are happiest doing one of each.
Merzouga hotel accommodation
Our hotel sits right at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, with a swimming pool, a traditional Moroccan restaurant and air-conditioned rooms. It is the easy base: arrive, drop your bags, swim, and step onto the sand two minutes from your door. Choose from a double room for couples, a triple room for small groups, or a quadruple room for families.
Merzouga desert camp experience
A night in our luxury desert camp is the highlight of most trips. You reach it on a sunset camel trek, sleep in a private en-suite tent with a real bed and hot shower, share a home-cooked tagine under the stars and wake for sunrise over the dunes. For a simpler, more mobile option there is also our mobile tent safari, and for a longer immersion the 3-night camel trek.
Hotel vs desert camp: which to choose?
| Hotel room | Luxury desert camp | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Rest, pool, families, early/late arrivals | The Sahara experience, couples, stargazing |
| Bathroom | Private, full | Private en-suite in tent |
| Pool | Yes | No (use the hotel pool before/after) |
| Nights | Any number | Usually one, sometimes two |
| From | €60 / night | €100 / night |
Our advice: book the hotel for your arrival and departure nights and the camp for the night in between. That way you get the pool and a proper base, plus the once-in-a-lifetime night on the sand.
Amenities
The hotel offers a swimming pool, a restaurant serving tagine and couscous, free WiFi, air conditioning, parking and room service. The desert camp offers en-suite tents, half-board dining, Berber music around the fire and unmatched dark-sky stargazing. Both are family-run and staffed by local Berber hosts.
Booking tips
- Book the camp night for a clear-sky forecast if you can — the stargazing is extraordinary.
- Travelling as a family? The quadruple room plus a family camp tent works well.
- On honeymoon? See our desert honeymoon package with a private decorated tent.
- Arriving late or leaving very early? Keep the hotel for those nights and camp in between.
