Merzouga is not just a place to look at dunes — it is a place to get out onto them. Here are the best desert activities we run at Erg Chebbi, from the classic overnight camel trek to adrenaline on a quad bike, with honest notes on who each one suits.

Camel trekking in Merzouga

The signature Sahara experience. On an overnight camel trek you ride into the dunes at sunset, reach a desert camp for dinner and Berber music, and return at sunrise. Want longer? The 3-night camel trek is a slow, deep immersion moving between camps. Gentle, iconic and suitable for almost everyone.

Quad biking across Erg Chebbi

For a jolt of adrenaline, a quad tour lets you ride an ATV across the sand and out to the edges of the dune field. Sessions run from one hour to half a day, with helmets and a guide included. No experience needed — the guide sets the pace to your comfort.

4x4 desert safari tours

A 4x4 safari is the comfortable way to reach the desert beyond the dunes: the Gnawa music village of Khamlia, nomad families, fossil fields, old mines and the Dayet Srij seasonal lake. Half-day and full-day options, ideal for those who prefer not to ride a camel.

Sandboarding on the dunes

Strap on a board and surf down the big crests. Sandboarding is free-spirited fun, usually added onto a camel trek or 4x4 trip — the guides know which dune faces give the best glide.

Sunset & sunrise watching

The simplest and, for many, the most memorable activity: climb a high dune and watch the light change over the Sahara. Sunrise from the top of Erg Chebbi, with the sand glowing pink then gold, is the moment most guests remember for life. Both are included with any camp night.

Berber music & cultural experiences

Evenings at the camp centre on the fire, drums and Berber songs. During the day, a visit to Khamlia to hear Gnawa music — brought here on the old caravan routes from West Africa — is a genuine cultural highlight, as is the Sunday Rissani market.

Photography in the desert

Erg Chebbi is a photographer's dream. The golden hours at each end of the day, the ripple patterns on untouched dunes and the caravan silhouettes make for unforgettable images. Bring a cloth to keep sand out of your gear and a spare battery for the cold nights.
